以色列裝甲部隊30日兵分兩路，在絕對空優掩護下分別從北部與東部方向進軍加薩走廊，並宣布殲滅包括4名著名指揮官在內、數十名「哈瑪斯」（Hamas）武裝分子而「哈瑪斯」方面則宣稱已擊退東面以軍攻勢，並持續與北面來犯的以軍部隊交戰。

路透報導，以軍戰車在白天攻抵貫穿加薩走廊的南北向薩拉丁公路（Salahudeen road），有意切斷加薩市中心與南部的聯繫，來強化對加薩北部的圍困；不過當地居民與「哈瑪斯」對外公關辦公室證實，以軍裝甲部隊後來撤回邊界圍牆，「哈瑪斯」聲稱是猛烈的迫擊砲火力將其擊退，另一支武裝力量「巴勒斯坦伊斯蘭聖戰運動」（俗稱「傑哈德」）則表示，該部正在當地與以軍交戰。滯留當地的巴勒斯坦民眾也觀察到，伴隨地面攻勢以軍發動了多達數十次的空襲行動。

以色列方面則表示拒絕透露部隊行動資訊，軍方最高層級發言人哈加里（Daniel Hagari）少將聲明僅表示「部隊正擴大行動」，並透露會派遣更多的步兵、戰車以及戰鬥工兵前往加薩，以便展開陸海空協調行動。以軍並再次向當地民眾發出警告，要求滯留的巴勒斯坦人逃往加薩南部避難；但也有巴勒斯坦人已經心灰意冷，表明寧死也不願再逃離家園。另外「哈瑪斯」與「傑哈德」也聲稱在約旦河西岸城市傑寧（Jenin）與以軍交戰。

而「哈瑪斯」也透過公布一段3名女性人質的影片發動輿論戰，其中1人指責以色列總理納坦雅胡（Benjamin Netanyahu）未能保護並確保所有人質獲釋，同時「哈瑪斯」宣稱有多達50名人質在以軍報復性大舉進攻下喪生。納坦雅胡則回擊稱這是「哈瑪斯」所做的「殘酷心理宣傳」。

聯合國方面則表示，加薩全境目前極缺民生物資與乾淨的用水，在加薩北部則有多達11.7萬人逃往醫院附近避難，而以色列方一再宣稱「哈瑪斯」利用醫院設立指揮中心並存放武器。
