作為聯合王國（UK）與大英國協（Commonwealth of Nations）的君主，女王伊莉莎白二世（Queen Elizabeth II）於2019年6月迎來93歲生日。在父親於1952年去世後，女王至今已統治67個年度。

《路透》（Reuters）報導，英國白金漢宮（Buckingham Palace）14日證實，女王特邀新登基的日本德仁天皇（Emperor Naruhito）與雅子皇后（Empress Masako），於春季正式訪問英國一事，已獲得宮內廳首肯。雖並未公佈確切時間，但預計會拜訪溫莎堡（Windsor Castle）並與王室成員會晤。

從戰前就交好的日本皇室與英國王室，歷年有多次元首互訪和成員正式訪問的經驗。

就以英女王伊莉莎白二世個人而言，包含本次預定行程在內，先後接待過父祖孫三代天皇，分別是1971年昭和天皇遊歷西歐諸國、1998年明仁上皇和美智子上皇后訪問英國。

不過，伊莉莎白二世與夫婿菲利普親王（Prince Philip），只有在1975年訪問過日本一回，當時獲得昭和天皇熱情接待。

獲得父親生前讓位、得以提前登基的德仁，也是第一位曾在牛津大學（University of Oxford）攻讀學位的日本皇室成員。日本內閣官房長官菅義偉上午記者會表示，由於仍有許多細節需處理，目前天皇訪問英國的時間，暫定在4至6月之間，並未對外透露更多內容和行程。
